Our First-Year Apprentices take on a Vehicle Design Challenge

From Concept to Course Completion

What does it take to turn a complex engineering brief into a working prototype?

Over the past few weeks, our first year apprentices put their skills, creativity and teamwork to the test as part of their end of year engineering project. Working within a simulated prototype development department, they were tasked with designing and manufacturing a human-powered all-terrain vehicle for a humanitarian aid application.

The apprentices were tasked with designing and manufacturing a prototype vehicle that met a series of strict customer requirements:

  • Constructed from a minimum of 75% nylon
  • Powered solely by human strength
  • Capable of safely supporting a 100kg operator
  • A detachable trailer capable of carrying an additional 25kg
  • Able to stop within five metres at top speed
  • Suitable for both rough and soft terrain
  • Designed and manufactured within project deadlines and budget expectations

Throughout the project, both teams tackled a range of engineering challenges that required them to evaluate design decisions, adapt to changes, test components and continuously refine their solutions. Every choice had to balance performance, practicality, manufacturability and customer requirements, mirroring the challenges faced in real engineering projects.

The project culminated in a final showcase and testing event, where each team put their vehicle to the test on a demanding course while meeting the agreed performance criteria. It was an opportunity to demonstrate not only the capabilities of their finished vehicles, but also the teamwork, problem solving and iterative development that had taken place throughout the build.

After weeks of designing, manufacturing, testing and refining their ideas, both teams successfully presented fully functioning prototype solutions for evaluation. The showcase highlighted the creativity, resilience and collaboration that had driven the project from concept to completion.
